I sent the following information to Red Hat yesterday asking for their participation in October's Linux Conference at Computer Expo 2002. I speak with the head of their educational program sometime Friday.
Hi Chad, I finally got the following information about the Hawaii Computer Expo from the conference organizer Dave Kobashigawa. I will follow up this e-mail with a phone call real soon. [My comments are inline within brackets.] From: Dave Kobashigawa <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> The Pacific Hawaii Business Computer Expo is Wednesday & Thursday, October 23 & 24, 2002. Exhibit times are 9am to 5pm. The New Wave Business Initiative Conference will be held on Thursday, October 24, 2002. Tentatively 8:30am to 4pm. The Hi-Five Computer Expo consumer technology show will be held Friday to Sunday, October 25 - 27, 2002. Exhibit times are Friday 11am to 9pm, Saturday 10am to 9pm, and Sunday 10am to 6pm. The New Wave Education Initiative Conference will be held on Friday, October 25, 2002. Tentatively 8:30am to 4pm. [We plan on making sure that 200-300 Educators will be at the Linux Education keynote. If we are successful in our publicity before October, I hope that we can get even more.] The plan is to have Linux keynotes on Thursday for business and Friday for education. Seminars on Thursday and Friday will be 9:30am to 11:30am and 1:30pm to 3pm. Additional seminars on Linux installation, Linux Compatibility And Installation, Thin-Client Computing Environments, Software Licensing, and other topics that we decide are marketable will be scheduled for Wednesday and Saturday. These sessions will be part of the Plain Talk About Technology sessions and priced at $179 each. Minimum class size is 5 paid attendees. Classes with less than five attendees will be canceled. Presenters are paid $300 for each session presented. Corporate sponsorship is available. Computer Expo will provide MPLUG with two 10' x 10' booths and 20-amps of 120v electricity in each show. One to solicit membership to MPLUG and the other to show Linux as a working alternative to the usual computing environments. Red Hat should purchase it's own corporate booth for each show. A Red Hat corporate booth can be physically located either next to or across from the MPLUG booths so that manpower can be shared. [If Red Hat chooses to have their own corporate booth in addition to our LUG booths, our MPLUG will provide volunteer manpower shifts for your booth. There may be value in Red Hat having an official booth presence if Red Hat will be doing keynotes, especially on the business conference side.] In consideration for Red Hat providing a keynote speaker for both the education and business conferences, Computer Expo will designate Red Hat a Gold Sponsor of each conference. This is a $1,500 value for each conference. This will entitle them to prominent placement on conference advertising and prominent banner placement during the conferences. [Please also ask Red Hat if they see value in sponsoring the trip of a guest speaker from a successful LTSP school district from the mainland. It may help to inspire confidence in Hawaii Educators if someone from perhaps Riverdale California were to be there to speak briefly at the keynote or seminar and answer questions later.] [Regarding recommended accommodations,] Either the Ala Moana Hotel, Ilikai or Hawaii Prince would probable be the best choices with the Hawaii Prince being more expensive. All three are on the edge of Waikiki and relatively near the Blaisdell Center. The Hilton Hawaiian village is also a good choice. We are working on a hotel deal but not having a great deal of success. Let me know if you have any more questions or concerns.
