Umm, this is a great idea. "Teacher" becomes the root of all the students. Is that what you're coming into?

I am a bit reluctant to suggest this, but you might consider
using a convention of /home/$teacher/$student and skip handling
symlinks all together. This approach would involve updating the
home dirs for the accounts in /etc/passwd.
