I may be a bit off base and I am not familiar with videocasting. I have been broadcasting online radio since 1999 and can tell you that there are several programs out there for multicasting. Most of these programs require the end user to install some software on their machine which in turn makes their machine a receiver and a transmitter. The idea is that when a new node connects to the broadcast the software detects the closest connection point to the end user and connects them to that node rather than the original broadcast point. This can save tons of bandwidth for the broadcaster.

Unfortunately most of my experiance in this endeavor has been with Winblows so I won't be of much help on the linux end. Maybe something exists like this for what you are trying to accomplish with video???

Thanks Angela.

I was already looking at VideoLan. My biggest issue is:

1. how do I get a server on the Mbone?
I think I just need to co-locate the server at Lava or Flex, get an
Mbone IP, and I am fine.

probably

2. do I need the server on Mbone?

you need to connect to someone who's connected to the Mbone,
like, oh, for e.g., LavaNet

3. can users get to the server if it is on Mbone?
I have been trying to find anything to connect to on Mbone and can't
find anything. Is no one using Mbone? Does RR not connect to Mbone?
Will broadband users even be able to access my multicast stream if I
get it setup?

last time I asked lavanet they said something on the order of:
"you should broadcast simultaneously multicast and unicast",
because many ISPs don't yet support multicast, many of your intended
recipients will have to access via unicast.
