More like people believe that software engineering is a manual labor type work, rather than intellectual type work. For instance, you don't hear lawyers or doctors hacking at anything. When someone use that term for doctors, it is usually meant in a derogatory manner. I.e. 'that doctor
did a hack job on his patient.'

My hacker friends have oft described good doctors who didn't put on too many airs as "hacker doctors".

its a culture thing.
