Why? simply because it will allow you to add max 12 Links (4 at each square and you can add one more square if needed) on these 3 squares without taking so much space. And, if you could have a mixture design of: #1 and #2, that could be great too. Small icons with different background colour will make the small icons more visible :) And, yes, this is not a final draft so totally understand that.
