I'm not too familiar with the installer screens, but I think that they
should ideally have a red warning at the appropriate stage:

The following operation has the potential to erase data on your hard drive.
Please make sure you have backed up all important data before proceeding.

And show links to some free/libre backup imaging tools.

If we want to attract windows users, we need to understand them better, and
avoid their clear mistakes, at least at installation level...

Not backing up is really a user fault. But confirmation, and clearer
explanations is what I think it could be better on some critic points!
