It is important to keep all software (kernel, base OS and applications)
updated.  Which particular flaw an attack might use is hard to guess.

If you need statistics, then you can generate some for yourself...
install a fresh copy of Lubuntu 12.04 in a VM, then run the usual

  sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

and see how many packages are listed.  Then go through that list, to
identify which are kernels, which are base OS packages that would be
included in the Ubuntu Server ISO, and which are GUI/desktop apps that
would not.

>From this, you will get an idea of what fraction of updates would be
available to you if you continue to run a version old enough that all
you have available are updates to the kernel and base (server) OS
package set.

Let us know what your numbers show.
