Nio, and all:

In testing yesterday, I found one case where the problem didn't occur.

In installing UbuntuStudio from the USB drive, during the manual partitioning, it warned me that the installation media was on sdb1, and that altering the partitions on that (sdb1) drive could not be done.

After that install, the USB drive remained intact.

On all the other installations, no such warning was given during the manual partitioning, and in all of those cases, the USB drive would no longer boot after the installation.
