In lubuntu, under swift menu -> System tools there is a "Printers" option for managing printers. Has anyone used this? What kind of results did you get?
That's the tool you use to configure printers, and it has worked for me. However, like you, because of their good Linux support, I tend to use HP printers.

My experience in general with printers in Linux, is if the printer has been around on the market for a year or so, it will generally work on Linux. The 'latest and greatest' new printer may not work on Linux, but give it a year or so, and it might.

I had an Epson printer that used a special color profile not on Linux, and just to change the ink cartridge, I had to fire up my Windows partition (which I really hated). It's probably the reason I stick to using HP printers.

There may be problems like not showing ink-levels, or using a custom color profile (that has the colors a bit 'off' when using the standard RGB profile). Also, in the case of an all-in-one printer, the scanner may not be usable on Linux.

But the printer itself will probably work. Sometimes you have to configure it as an older model of the same printer.
