As for lxpanel cpu applet I found this, it is a fork with more features,
and YES it IS hard coded in:

It *might* be different in the regular version.... but you could
download this repo, follow the instructions and (of course) change
lxtask to whatever
(My favorite lightweight one is htop)
x-terminal-emulator -e 'htop'
voila... simple hack.
It would be nice to read it from a config file, or have a nice way to
change it! I think PCMan (and friends) would bring your code upstream
if it was nice!

I want to include the required information but I do not want to be
overwhelming. I'm also mostly unfamiliar with the protocol even though
I've subscribed for a while and have even answered a few questions.
I have used lxpanel to create a sort of dock. This dock appears when I
hold the mouse over the center of the top of the screen. Then, when I
move the mouse, it disappears. It's kind of neat and does a good job,
but I digress.
I am not a fan of the default task manager that comes with Lubuntu. It's
a task manager, most of them are fairly light. I did some investigating
and, it turns out, one can use the xfce4-taskmanager without importing a
bunch of other stuff. In fact, I've been using it for a while. I have to
say, I love it. If you've never tried it - then it's as easy as apt-get
and as easy to remove as anything else. (I highly recommend trying it -
it's fantastic.)
Now, in my little "dock" I have enabled the applet that is the resource
monitor. That basically tells me how much RAM and CPU is in use. It's
handy. When I click on it, it happily opens up lxtask (which is what
Lubuntu comes with.)
I have changed the system default to xfce4-taskmanager (by the way) and
it even works when I open the task manager with CTRL + ALT + DEL. That
is NOT what happens when I click on the resource monitor icons in my
dock. That happily opens lxtask - which leads me to believe that it is
hard coded and that's unfortunate.
See, I want my mouse click, when over the icons that are the resource
monitor, to open the new one - I want them to open xfce4-taskmanager and
I seem to be unable to figure out how to do this.
What I have done: I have used a search engine and discovered that they
call them plugins. At least that is what it looks like. Now, in theory,I
guess I could go ahead and write my own. I imagine that I can probably
go so far as to find the source and hack that to make it do what I want
- maybe. However, I'm hoping there's a far easier option than the two
that I see as possible solutions.
I'd also add that I've not programmed much of anything for a *very* long
time. Until recently, I'd not really done any programming of note since
2007 and, to be more accurate, I've not done much since about 2001 -
though I kept sort of at it until 2007. I'd hired competent people to do
so on my behalf starting way back in the early 1990s. (I've been retired
since 2007 which is when I sold my business.)
Is there a way to change which application is opened when I click the
resource monitor applet (plugin?) that is in lxpanel? If someone can
point me in the right direction - I can try hacking the code and that
might be good for me. I presume it's GPL so I'll just release the
changes and directions. Heck, if I get really fancy, I guess I could
write an option to allow people to select their own but time is a bit
pressed until sometime after November of this year.
Finally, that's all the information I can think of to add. If you need
more information then I'll be happy to assist you in assisting me. I am,
again, sorry if my saved drafts ended up going to the list. I have no
idea how that even happened - it did so on my screen and I'm hoping that
it's a fluke and only appears on my screen. I really would like to know
if that's something I should be alarmed with or can repair - but that's
a question for another time.
