Hi Greg! I can confirm that your 'live video:radeonfb:1024x768-32@60' yaboot command works also for a 17" (1440x900) screen - which once the live cd is mounted is correctly recognized as 1440x900 screen.
I cannot confirm, that the command is not needed any furthermore since i'm not getting through the installation. I'm always hanging at "Detecting hardware, please wait . . .
