So if I will be accepted as a proper developer, the best idea I think is creation of a CVS branch for this purpose.
As Erik mentioned, committers are added only after they have a track record of quality contributions. In the meantime, the best way to proceed would be to log (or find) a bug, and add patch files to it. Patches should be generated with something like 'cvs diff -Nu > patches.txt', while connected to the root of the project.
I think this is a great project and suspect you'll get lots of help.
