This could be useful for you sir! Recently I had to uninstall and re-install my prg and I found out that the mail profile never got deleted. So you might want to first try copying your mail profile (see mail profile folder below) over to the new computer before doing the installation.

Migration How do I migrate my Mozilla mail and settings to Thunderbird?

Thunderbird is now using separate profiles to not interfere with Mozilla. In order to migrate your mail and settings from Mozilla to Thunderbird, follow these steps:

1. Start up the new version of Thunderbird and let it create a default Thunderbird profile for you. When the Account Manager comes up click cancel and exit the application.
2. Find the Mozilla profile you are interested in migrating (...\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\\XXXXXXXX.slt). Find the location of your new default Thunderbird profile folder. Now copy all the contents of the first directory into the second including subfolders.
3. You aren't done yet because Mozilla uses absolute directory paths in prefs.js. Open up the Thunderbird prefs.js file in a text editor. Search and replace all strings containing: ...\Mozilla\Profiles\XXXX.slt with ...\Thunderbird\Profiles\XXXX.slt. Save the file and start up Thunderbird.

The Profile Folder

Before the configuration files are presented, you should know how to find your "profile folder", as it is commonly called. The profile folder is where Thunderbird saves all your settings and refers to a location on your hard drive.

On Windows 2000/XP, the path is usually %AppData%\Thunderbird\Profiles\default\xxxxxxxx.slt\, where xxxxxxxx is a random string of 8 characters. Just browse to C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\ and the rest should be obvious.

On Windows 95/98/Me, the path is usually C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\default\xxxxxxxx.slt\.

On Linux, the path is usually ~/.thunderbird/default/xxxxxxxx.slt.

On MacOS X, the path is usually ~/Library/Thunderbird/Profiles/default/xxxxxxxx.slt.

Note: Thunderbird is capable of handling more than one user and thus, more than one profile. The path examples above refers to the default profile that is automatically created when you start Thunderbird for the first time. You can manage any number of profiles by using the Profile Manager.

%AppData% is a shorthand for the Application Data path on Windows 2000/XP. To use it, click Start > Run..., enter %AppData% and press Enter. You will be taken to the "real" folder, which is normally C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Application Data.
