Is this the
default IMAP package that comes along with SuSE? How about other software, such
as Courier-IMAP?
What if you
stored your passwords in a MySQL database with the crypt() function? But can the
SuSE IMAP be recompiled to support MySQL database
authentication?

Found my problem. From SuSE 8.2 and above IMAP only allows encrypted passwords, not plain text (unless under SSL).
