Subject: OSS at WSIS - Please post to LUG
Date: Fri, 12 Dec 2003 00:41:14 -0800
Guys
I am currently attending the WSIS summit in Geneva and
exhibiting on behalf of my employer Linux Solutions.
However I wanted to fill you in about whats going on
here.
After M$'s successful lobbying that had the US veto
the inclusion of OSS on the official agenda of WSIS,
we thought all had been lost.
However for those of us in the thick of the
resistance, I can assure you that OSS has re-emerged
at most of the discussions in various plenary here. So
much is being talked about it, delegates who had never
heard of it before have flooded the only 2 stands
dedicated to OSS i.e LPI and yours truly (LS). We got
a boost from HP that supplied bootable CDs of Debian
and LPI also organised for bootable CDs of Suse 9.0.
They su[pplied them in their thousands and trust us,
we have dished them in their tens of thousands :-).
I have been impressed by an effort that has been going
on to create a Linux version aimed at Governments. I
have a few CDs here that I shall bring back home.
However for those interested, email me and I shall
give u the link for a downloadable version (do I see u
crying about bandwidth?).
As FOSSFA (www.fossfa.org) we had an interesting
emeting yesterday and the truth is that come what may,
the OSS revolution has caught on like a cancer (to
quote Ballmer). There is nothing much countries like
the USA will do to avoid it spreading, they just have
to embrace and adapt to it.
Phew...I have alot to talk about but since I aint the
gossiping type, I gotta run back to my stand or else I
could be sacked.
PS: Our very own Mugabe is around too :-)
Cheers guys
Wire James
