Sure its not a hardware problem then?
Try replacing the ethernet card (with one from a nearby machine which is working well) and then see. I have seen some of the weirdest hardware problems.
Software rarely changes on its own, or you have been rooted and some script kiddy did it.

Well, this is an ipsec+freeswan that has been running for 112 days 
straight( i am always trying break a record or two). Having added no 
packages in all that time,yes,i didnt upgrade my kernel,i am sure it is 
not package specific so i am at my hairs end.i will give your suggestion a kick and see.
