I will wade in just to say this ..........

Even though they are my friends, it may hurt them for me to say that I
think Sarah is probably correct on they being naieve.
We tend to trust too much. Sadly, this is a dog eat dog world.

I don't know much more than in the Observer story
http://www.ugandaobserver.com/today/features/buz/biz200409162.php
but I think giving your laptop to some young guns trying to impress
their bosses (for two weeks with all your software on it) is asking for
trouble.

Its just dumb!! The guys at the lower ranks cannot be held responsible.
They are not officers, they cannot even order a paper clip or tooth pick
without autherisation, so how can you give them your laptop.

If I were them, I would meet with management, get their own phone
records to the numbers of the young engineers they called and talk about
the best way to solve it. You may find that mangement was not aware of
the theft. Rushing to sue is a time and money waster.
