Last year the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems from
Uganda Martyrs University produced the EASY LINUX guide. The EASY LINUX guide
is the first fully illustrated guide for Beginners on the Linux platform. It
provides the students with an introduction to X-Windows and Open Office. The
guide can be downloaded free of charge on:
http://www.eacoss.org/dmdocuments/Guide_to_computer_literacy_V3.2.pdf.

The guide has attracted a lot of attention and has been used throughout
Uganda. Recently, a teacher's guide has been added and sample exams were
issued for adopters.

Last week the remaining people in the project team (Mulo and Victor) have
signed an agreement with Bridges.org to develop a South African version of
the guide. The new guide will be based on Open Office v2, include localized
examples and will appear in three languages: English, Xhosa and Afrikaans.
The new guide will be made available to all schools in South Africa that use
or want to use Linux.

We expect the guide to be published by the end of the year.

It is great to realize that the Uganda OSS community is noticed and is able to
play a role on the continent.
