Geekcorps Paid Volunteer Opportunities

In bringing the World Wide Web to the whole wide world, Geekcorps
http://www.geekcorps.org a volunteer-based international nonprofit
development organization, is looking for IT experts to travel to Africa for
several challenging IT-based programs that are changing the role of
information and communication technologies in the developing world.

--- Opportunities

- Knowledge Management Experts

If you have at least 3-5 years of professional experience implementing
Knowledge Management (KM) systems in large multi-site organizations with
disparate and disorganized intuitional organizational knowledge, you could
be a Geekcorps volunteer with the Common Market for Eastern and Southern
Africa (COMESA) - http://www.comesa.int in Lusaka, Zambia.

COMESA promotes regional economic integration through trade and investment,
and needs to develop a KM system that will allow COMESA's disparate offices
and divisions to share and archive information in an organized and
accessible manner.

- Object-Oriented Software Programmers

If you have 3-5 years high-end PHP and object-oriented development,
manipulating ASP/COM objects, and MySQL database experience, especially in
3-tier architecture, you could be a Geekcorps volunteer in one of two new
programs we'll be starting soon, one in Kenya and one in South Africa.

In Kenya, we are developing an integrated and automated connection between
the Kenyan and Ugandan Revenue Authorities that will reduce border-crossing
times from days to hours. In South Africa we are developing a cutting edge
educational program for up-and-coming African programmers, the African
Virtual Open Initiatives and Resources project http://avoir.uwc.ac.za

 - C++ Programmers

If you've been a C++ programmer for at least 3-5 years, especially with Open
Office or audio/video/presentation tools, you could be a Geekcorps volunteer
with the African Virtual Open Initiatives and Resources project
http://avoir.uwc.ac.za in South Africa.

With the University of Western Cape, we are developing a cutting edge
educational program for up-and-coming African programmers, and integrating
KEWL.NextGen into Open Office as both an instructional exercise and to
produce quality Africa-developed software.

- Linux OS Developers

If you can speak decent French and have at least 3-5 years of professional
experience with advanced KDE/Gnome Linux, shell scripting, and PHP/MySQL you
could be a Geekcorps volunteer in the Mali Connectivity Project
http://mali.geekcorps.org

Geekcorps is developing Linux-based mobile computing platforms for rural
areas in Mali, teaching talented locals how to maintain and grow the systems
in the process with great ingenuity and minimal expense.

--- Timing

Volunteers willing to work with people and innovate with minimal technical
equipment in a developing country are needed immediately (Spring-Summer
2006). Volunteers will stay in Africa about four months, working on
multiple projects and teaching small groups in a hands-on setting. More
volunteers will be needed in Fall and Winter 2006-07 to continue the
experience.

--- Rewards

Geekcorps can offer great benefits (in addition to that warm and fuzzy
feeling that comes from doing good). International airfare, expat-level
lodging, decent living stipend, and dedicated in-country staff are provided.
Daily challenges and rewards are guaranteed.

Interested? Geekcorps http://www.geekcorps.org
