Subject: [Africasource2-l] ICT Students Supporting NGOs and SMEs
Dear friends in Africa,
I am starting a research project looking into
different ways that ICT students or recent
graduates can be engaged to provide capacity
building and technology support to NGOs and Small
to Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs). I know there
were a few people at the camp that were working
on such projects. If you are personally involved
in one, or know of other projects that I can
contact to participate in the research, please
let me know. Please also forward this on to
others you think might be interested.
For more information on the project, please see
the news release below, or check our website:

Thanks,
Rudi

*ICT Students Supporting NGOs and SMEs*
Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) and Small to
Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) often face
similar challenges when it comes to implementing
ICTs in their operations. Ungana-Afrika is
looking at different approaches to overcome these
challenges, and answer some key questions:
* What can be done now to ensure that smaller
organisations are able to plan, utilize and sustain ICT adoption efï¬ciently?
* How can we ensure that low-cost technology
support is available when there is not enough
capacity within the organisations?
One approach to building the capacity of these
organizations is to utilize the potential of
local ICT students as a part of their education
or immediately after their graduation. The
concept is based on a community service model
where students and graduates will provide
capacity building and technology support for
civil society organisations, SME's and even
smaller public sector ofï¬ces. In return they
benefit from practical experience, which will be
valuable in their future careers.
Ungana-Afrika, with the support of Hivos, is
conducting a feasibility study for implementing
such projects. They will be looking at projects
that have been implemented around the world
involving ICT students supporting NGOs and SMEs.
The research will look into the various models
that have been implemented, and identify factors
that affect the impact, operations and
sustainability of these projects. The results
will be shared under a Creative Commons Licence,
and will be a valuable resource for institutions
looking to implement such projects locally. The
report is expected to be published in May 2006.
Rudi von Staden, lead researcher for the project,
is looking for such initiatives that could be
included in the research and invites anyone who
knows of such projects to contact him through his
email address, [EMAIL PROTECTED] Those who
would like to be updated about the progress of
the project should also contact him directly.
Project updates will be published to the
Ungana-Afrika website: http://www.ungana-afrika.org/projects/sdp.htm
