Erika, You haven't indicated whether this is a Linux box or a windows box.
If it is a windows box, refer to this link: (http://www.petri.co.il/forgot_administrator_password.htm) If it is a linux platform, you will need to boot that machine in single user mode - and thus a very basic shell, then you can be able to re-assign the root passwd.
