That is all so very nice
Now does someone have a link for free Linux Cbts
After all if one can expect to find anything free
Wouldn't tit be in an open source forum ;-)

Also

BTW: supposing a generous member has already purchased such material
does LUG have an ftp server from where members could download (and upload)
useful stuff ??

Hi all,

I've been on the net trying to find accredited Linux / Unix training
content. PDFs are great, but the most comfortable are the multimedia
tutorial videos. Being a person who believes that one's time is too valuable

to repeat another person's mistakes, I feel that the availability of such
content would help train and improve more people's Linux and general
administration and usability skills. I found http://www.linuxcbt.com that
provides various training videos, that are product or service specific.

I know that EACOSS and a few other centres provide some level of training.
However the more accessible and usable forms of training like multimedia
videos would be better suited to the students who have access to the
Internet and "free" institutional computers.

EACOSS and the rest can use and incorporate multimedia content in their
courses, to provide a more "practical" and training oriented product.

Any more related content sources would be welcome.

                                                                 FRANCIS.

Hello Francis,

You are completely right about the multimedia training but linuxcbt.com are
selling their DVDs at over $100 PER product or service. The one with a
collection of different services costs $2,190! I do not know about those
students having access to the means to purchase electronically and even then

being able to spend that $100 per service that they need to learn. The
people who need the knowledge most are probably going to have to keep
looking
through those PDFs. At the same time, however, I believe that multimedia
content is a form of enhancement (visual aids) to education but it cannot
replace the actual text which provides the core of the concepts that one
needs to learn. So either depending on which student one is, they can study

the material in detail and learn use the videos to visualise or vice
versa...
get a quick start with visual material and then learn the core..

Mulo

You mentioned about EACOSS somewhere.Yes we all know they are doing a
great job, all that takes time to achieve.
Good educational centers should have map like this (at least)

Theory--------->Visualisation-------->Handson trainning------->Anything

At least if I remember well, the instructor did some talking as usual,
then did some illustrations on the CLI + GUI.
Then bah... we went hands-on.Well, we didn't ask for the videos but I
know if we did we would have got them.
Many free programs do Desktop recording for such work like the one sold
at http://www.linuxcbt.com
I use istanbul (http://live.hujjat.org/istanbul-0.1.1.tar.bz2) that
comes with Core 5 on my box, good for sreencasts though in ogg format
and many others. As you know seeing is believing and unlike the
computer, the brain retrieves images faster than info stored as
text/thoery!If you need to have speed at info retrieval from your brain
use visuals. If NASA and the US-Airforce use the same process why not
Linux training?
Thanks for bringing this up!
Cheers
Ronny
