IF YOU ARE ON WINDOWS (XP or VISTA) These instructions are for you.

I strongly advise that you use your own computer only and not that of your company or school to send and receive encrypted mail.

These instructions are divided into four parts
A) Downloading and installing the encryption application for windows (GPG) B) Downloading and installing an email client (Thunderbird) which will be your client for your secure email C) Setting up a GMAIL account where you will pop email from when at work/school or away from work/school.
D) Setting up the Encryption in Thunderbird

PART A
Download this file and run it once it is all down
ftp://ftp.gnupg.org/gcrypt/binary/gnupg-w32cli-1.4.8.exe

When its done installing it ends by saying FINISH and "Launch Mozilla Thunderbird now" ..... UNCHECK the Launch Mozilla Thunderbird Now and click FINISH.

This file turns on Encrypption under Thunderbird.
To turn on Encryption in Thunderbird follow these instructions
Open Thunderbird then navigate to the Thunderbird menu Tools > Addons and click on the Install ... button. Choose the enigmail-0.95.6-tb+sm.xpi file on your desktop...... then click "INSTALL NOW"

Thunderbird will then ask to restart.

Your Thunderbird will now have an option at the top called OpenPGP
Go to that menu and select Key Management
Under that Menu select Generate

You will get a new dialog box.
Enter your long password (called a passphrase). DO NOT FORGET IT but make it long (8 characters is enough) and difficult (put numbers and these signs ... [EMAIL PROTECTED]:*& .... in it).
In the "Key Expiry" box select "Key Does not Expire"
And in the Advanced Tab change from a Key Size of 2048 to 4096

Everything else is OK.

Next question click "NO". Do not create a Revocation Certificate.

ONCE YOU ARE DONE,
You will see a line with your name and gmail address under the Key Management box.
Right Click on that line and choose "Send Public Keys by Email"
SEND ME via email your PUBLIC KEY and I shall send you my PUBLIC KEY and we shall then send a few test messages.

The three files above (Thuderbirg, gnupg and enigmail) are on many flashdisks floating around Kampala and if you need them, just ask.
