if you are running KDE 3.5 on the box, you could try the view mode, 'File Size View' of Konqueror, which does the same thing kiggs suggests, but visually.
If you run KDE on another machine, you might be able to still navigate to your server using an address in the address bar like: fish://[EMAIL PROTECTED]/var that will allow you to browse the remote disk using an ssh tunnel.
