I don't typically like to engage in such talks as politics
on mailing lists because these are fairly-charged subjects.

That notwithstanding, I just want to say a few things:

It honestly boggles my mind why a couple of folk on this
list (and another Uganda list Ernest, Ziggy, Noah, McTim
and a few others on here are on) are so hell-bent on
downplaying the significance of how the Americans voted
yesterday.

Is there a serious need for some of us not to feel the joy
and admiration of one of the biggest accomplishments in the
history of the world? Is it more important to disregard it
just because it belongs to the Americans and doesn't affect
us all?

I really don't get that.

On my drive in to work today, the local radio stations in
Malaysia, a multi-racial country still trying to grow
toward what the United States have now achieved, were
enchanted by the great fortunes of Obama and the people
he's going to serve.

Indonesia are flush with joy as Obama spent part if his
childhood there - his ex-classmates ululated by his win.

London, Berlin, Paris, Nairobi, Johannesburg, Lagos,
Singapore, Sri Lanka, Obama (Japan), Beijing, Kabul,
Tehran, Dubai, Ottawa, Cairo, Doha, Rio, Baghdad... the
list goes on.

This is a momentous occasion, folks - and if not for
anything else, all peoples of African decent should be
especially proud.

This time around, taking a "so what" approach really isn't
cool. The man has just done something here - recognize.

Mark.
