I really don't like Ubuntu but... what about installing the xserver-xorg-video intel package?
Install latest intel driver: $ sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel Switch to virtual console 1 with Ctrl+Alt+F1 Stop Gnome Display Manager: $ sudo/etc/init.d/gdm stop Configure intel video driver: $ sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg Restart Gnome Display Manager: $/etc/init.d/gdm/start If all else fails, perhaps we can convince you to switch to another linux distro...
