ok, some googling shows me that its a gkrellm plugin called "i8krellm",
which "...supports auto and manual mode and allows the user to ... set
different fan trigger temperatures for auto mode via the plugin's
configuration window..."

However, it looks to me like it was written mainly for Dell hardware, and
my laptop was indeed a Dell when I used that tool.
