Rule #1 does apply very much these days: keep all your systems uptodate. even 
just installing SP3 is not enough, you have to run the updates every 
patch-tuesday.

a good tool i used to use was autopatcher, as it allows to downlaod the update 
only once. i got a copy from 2 moths back (i think), which has all patches 
post SP3 with it.

If people are interested, let me know, i have to find a way to make it 
available.

if anyone is a total hero, he figures out how to point the autopatcher 
executable to an alternative download source (a non samba share). In that 
case, we could build an M$ cache as well. Only problem being, its illegal. 
but eh, everything in our line of business can be made illegal on the spot 
these days)
