Some time back I installed ubuntu 8.10 (gnome) on my moms desktop after I got tired of her over complaining about "things not working" and being so slow (XP SP3). I hadn't used (K)ubuntu since 6.02 IIRC, and was very impressed with the desktop layout and beautiful simplicity of it all. My mom uses her desktop for email, internet, read/write M$ documents and skype. This wasn't a problem for the "Intrepid Ibex". After I upgraded Open Office to version 3.0 to handle M$ Office 2007 files, created some desktop shortcuts and installed some non free software packages, my moms "new" computer was good to go. I didn't tell her that she wasn't in windows land anymore but just explained that I installed a more stable and secure system. This was about 3 month ago and until today she has never asked me for any support or complained about "things not working".

As long as you disable single-click on KDE, then I've found that it doesn't matter too much to the users.

Vista "migratees" might enjoy KDE 4's eye-candy more. Just make sure you update to latest 4.2.

I'd have offered to help with SUSE - spent a couple of weeks fighting with an Atheros wireless chipset similar to that on the highlighted Acer Aspire but I'm out of town this weekend.

Best of luck to all!

To be honest Jan, either Desktop Manager is similar enough for your users to follow from a Windows environment, I think the question you should ask is which are you happier supporting.

But you can also just stick on both and let him/her choose ;-) Open Source is after all about choice.

Hi All!

I am about to introduce Ubuntu to one of my users and with this in mind,
I was wondering if any of you have any research on which desktop eases
the transition better, KDE or Gnome?

I am planning on putting on Kubuntu on this users laptop, and I imagine that this particular user would adjust to well to both, but others might
have problems accepting either one.

(I myself is on Gnome)
