Jan,

Many thanks for the write up. Been busy since Friday. Will post the
presentations plus the old ones ( I promise Jacques) this time. In addition to
he ideas list for the next meeting at the end of July.

Thanks again to those who turned up and asked interesting questions, I meet new
people each time which is great as it means our community is growing/ and or
much bigger than one might have originally suspected.

Will keep you all posted.

Manage your bandwidth use
Reinier did a presentation about why would I do bandwidth control?
He showed how traffic goes in different scenarios.
The basic outcome is, if you manage your bandwidth by blocking unwanted
traffic and caching the rest, you get the most out of your internet
connection.
Secondly; we need to promote local content as it is faster to get and
essentially (to ISPs anyway) cheaper to get.

Installing a Linux/*bsd firewall
Kyle and Simon
They covered the basics about networks.
They then ran an installation of pfSense
Different packages for pfSense was discussed including Captive Portal
(www access control), Quality of Service, Intrusion Detection System
(Snort), Squid Web Cache, SquidGuard (URL block), HTTP Antivirus Proxy
(HAVP).
Load Balancing and Failover of internet connections.
