No, it isn't. It is free but not open source.
To answer Ronald's questions: The other features you suggest are
certainly something to think about, and I will queue them to the
relevant developers internally.
On the Ads, it all depends on the size of the Ad: We try to keep
them small. However keep in mind that only one copy of the Ad is
downloaded per Cafe (by the server). Also, no downloads are done of
course unless a new Ad is available. And the Ad server is not local at
this stage (long story).

I love Butterfly but could you design a more simpler front end for
the novice linux user so that they can backup the database, inculde
MAC and AAA functionality.I saw some user trying to update the keys
on command line and I think that was tough for her otherwise
bigups :-)
And Paul thanks for patching in the new ver before advanced users
could beat the timer b4 reboot seen it evolve for 6 years somewhere.
Quick one if you don mind how much bandwidth do the ads take?
Is the ad serving server local?
Could you send it to sourceforge please as a UG project :-)

Wire,
I think its not being shy but Sometimes I am misled to think that
marketing and software development are two conflicting professions.
Developers usually appear principled and perfectionist ever
investing time in finding out weaknesses in their own application so
as to have them fixed in the next version release rather than going
around praising their own work to who ever cares to listen. i think
that's the only thing Microsoft is better at than the Linux
community. The later looks full of Good programmers while the former
is full of marketeers. some times i wonder the hype and credit
Microsoft's Vista OS was given when it was released and there after
(not forgetting it hugely expensive License) when am waiting for it
to load (around 4 minutes ) every time i start my machine (1GB RAM)
at my workplace and as disable the less needed services after.its a
pain When i compare with the free Linux on my PC at home (which has
far less resources) but takes seconds to load. Sometimes i think it
takes some level of 'Madness' to look a good marketeer for a
software in this current global economics.

I am very grateful that for once you have stood up and claimed your
rightful position. As one who has watched Butterfly evolve over the
years from when it was first released, I should say I am very
impressed by the work done. To me, it is one product that I will
always endorse whenever I get a chance.
Unfortunately I keep telling people that the developers of Butterfly
and Mbuni are too shy to say that their products are the best. Did
you go for a marketing course lately?

Indeed :) Butterfly for Windows (with Linux or Windows backend) has
been FREE for a while now. We have recently been live testing an all-
linux implementation. In the past you could use Linux for the
clients and use Butterfly's Hotspot control feature to control the
clients/ workstations surfing abilities. (If you've been to any
Infocom Hotspots such as Humura, Cafe Pap, etc. then you've seen
this in action.) The snag with this version is it required a Windows
machine for the administration component. Not any more. The all-
linux implementation has a GTK-based app that provides the
administration component, and a full client-side controller for the
desktops. We don't have any installations in Kla running this but we
do have some in a neighbouring country. Since we consider it in test
still, product plugging has been somewhat muted. Now, because Simon
has tempted me into the territory of product- plugging, I should say
that Butterfly is older and perhaps more mature than most other
Cybercafe systems *in the world*. Some of the core functionality
dates back to 1997. Since it has been continually developed since
then, I feel almost brave enough to state that I don't believe many
such systems will serve you as well as it will. Enough! P. On Jul
