You can't get to your iPhone console without jailbreaking true. But i
have an entire page of apps for irc rdp vnc ssh telnet that were free
from the app store. My 3g was jailbroken and it was over rated when I
got the 3gs I didn't even bother since it is not worth the trouble.

iirc - you cannot have the shell (bash) on a non-jail-broken iphone.
you wont even ssh into it. Needs jail-breaking first to use bash &
openssh
of course you can use web-based apps to ssh or trace from its web
browser
