Godwin, Before you downgrade or get too frustrated, I suggest you try Linux Mint Isadora, (NOT PEPPERMINT, that is for cloud computing; it will frustrate you more). By trying I mean you first run it from Live CD and see if it does the same.
Isadora is derived from Ubuntu 10.04 but in many ways does not exhibit the problems of Lucid. I have been successful with it where Lucid refused to install. Dont ask me why, but it worked for me and I now recommend it over Lucid. I suppose its merits are in the fact that many drivers and codecs were added to the Live Cd and get installed by default, giving you less heradaches. No harm in trying. If you need a CD, I can copy for you.
