Hmm,

The only thing I can say is that it works. I configured it about three years 
ago on a similar laptop and I was using kdm. it worked consistently with both X 
and console logins. However I unfortunately can't remember what i did but the 
details should be in the list archives as I remember posting about my 
experience.
