A happier and more prosperous 2011.
Apologies for cross-posting but it is all about yearning for a solution.
I have a Dell PowerEdge SC1425 with two HDDs each approximately 1 TB.
My goal is to install openSuSe 11.2 on the two HDDs as independent drives
with particularly different partitions (e.g swap & root on sda and /var and
/srv on sdb).
The HDDs are by default set-up or so installed as follows
/dev/mapper/ddf1_VOLUME 0 931.48 GB DM RAID ddf1_VOLUME 0
/dev/sda 931.51 GB Hitachi-HDS72101
/dev/sdb 931.51 GB Hitachi-HDS72101
/dev/mapper/ddf1_VOLUME 931.48 GB DM
Please note the physical drives are sda and sdb which I can not partition at
all with ddf1_VOLUME 0 on.
If I delete ddf1_VOLUME 0, ddf1_VOLUME remains in the background and can not
install on the HDDs even after successful partition as appropriate with the
following message when installation begins
## Start of error message
Failure occurred during following action:
Removing raid ddf1_VOLUME 0
System error code was: -13001
cd /var/log/YaST2 && echo y | /sbin/dmraid -E -r '/dev/sdb':
ERROR: ddf1: seeking device "/dev/sdb" to 512104901378048
ERROR: writing metadata to /dev/sdb, offset 1000204885504 sectors, size 0
bytes returned 0
ERROR: erasing ondisk metadata on /dev/sdb
## End of error message
If I partition ddf1_VOLUME 0 as necessary, installation goes smoothly until
it reaches the time of boot loader when errors appear thus an incomplete &
unusable installation.
I thought it was all about BIOS RAID settings and went to F2 (at start-up) >
Integrated Devices > ATA Mode | RAID Mode | Off (changed to ATA Mode) to no
success of removing ddf1_VOLUME 0.
Played with the NVRAM jumper too as well as plucking out the CMOS! Installed
Windows 7 32-bit successfully and both HDDs are shown as usable for user
files although sdb can not be initially used for installing on the OS.
What could I be missing?
