Hi,

Whenever apt(itude) runs, it first checks if there is a small lock file. if
the file exists, it presumes apt is already running and dies (as it is on
colline's machine), if it doesnt exist it creates the lock file and then does
it works.
When apt exists normally, it deletes the lock file again.

Not if you switch off your machine the harsh way.

To fix this, you need to delete the lock file

  sudo rm /var/lib/dpkg/lock

after this you can install the jdk.

The trick with the jdk is that you have to scroll down down down untill you
see the OK button. That is why you got stuck in the first place. (scrolling
down goes much faster with the pagedown button, btw)

good luck!
