By the terms latest version of ubuntu which version number and distros are u referring to and the type of notebook,it maybe helpful to narrow don if we had a clue to all of these thing,otherwise pliz dont be alarmed,its jus temporarily.have you tried to restart the system and on the options wen booting where their is (recovery mode),tried to start with that option. Also if it doesnt work re-insert the boot device you used to load the OS.boot from the device again taking care to note where the screen resolution option comes,you set the operating system to choose the best option for your notebook. Maybe its drivers updates issue,seeing that you can access the wireless network,use it to update the operating system,in the update,the screen resolution will be restored,jus let the updates tek their tym. otherwise good luck.
