Joseph,
It seems Ubuntu has not recognized your network cards,
Can you give the LUG your hardware specs? Also if you have not given up on your 
lost data, you can try TRK from 
http://trinityhome.org/Home/index.php?content=TRINITY_RESCUE_KIT____CPR_FOR_YOUR_COMPUTER&front_id=12&lang=en&locale=en/.
 I am assuming you are aware of general data recovery/rescue procedures.
