Hello Linux People,

Good Monday morning to you all.

Been to my wits end on this one, so i have come here:

Got an HP G60, with Ub-10.04 (2.6.32-34-generic) which last friday decided
to run in low graphics mode - after a screen saving session - and after a
series of poking around, it seems to me that its an issue to do with my
xorg.conf set up.

I have re-installed xserver-xorg -
http://www.ubuntugeek.com/ubuntu-tiphow-to-removeinstall-and-reconfigure-xorg-without-reinstalling-ubuntu.html
- to
no solution,

Have even re-installed intel drivers -
http://www.howtoforge.com/how-to-install-latest-intel-driver-2.12-on-ubuntu-10.04-lucid-lynx
still
to no solution.

My /etc/X11/... directory seems to now have 4 copies of
xorg.conf-backup-<timestamp>, as well as xorg.conf.failsafe.

I´ve re-installed gdm, and re-run gdmsetup - which does not actually allow
me to unlock the dialog box and play with those settings.

Instead, after it has run, the log says:
*WARNING **: Error calling GetValue('daemon/AutomaticLoginEnable'): Key not
found*
*DEBUG: init user = 'brian' auto=False*

Because LUCID (and newer distros- i think - ) does not need an xorg.conf
inorder to boot - something about the kernel taking over that responsibility
- am not sure how to get the kernel to do my graphics recognition well
enough

Been thru some, stuff that talks about gdm2setup - which seems to be
recommended for Lucid and newer distros - and so this morning, i tried it:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1358026 still, no solution.

once i go past the login, what i get is a shell prompt. that's where am
stuck. In the meantime, i thought to dig into the vast experience here.
