Hi Susan, I think that one of the hotest points, from experience, is to get a modem/telephone compatible with the software. Here is the list of compatible hardware for your friend http://www.frontlinesms.com/download/requirements.php
I don't know whether your friend has a typical Huawei USB Internet modem but if she does, according to the page above, the series E models are compatible. Once she gets a working hardware, I'm sure she can ask on the FrontlineSMS forums or drop some questions here in the LUG.
