PlayOnLinux is just a (good) GUI frontend for wine.

Codeweavers actively develops extra features on wine, and contribute their
changes back to wine. So in effect, PlayOnLinux is benefitting from
Codeweavers work on Crossover.

Another advantages of Crossover are:
1) Bottles. All apps can be isolated from each other in a totally separate
"bottle". Stops cross-program corruption of your wine folder. (Of course
you can do this manually but...)

2) Crossties. For supported apps, Crossover has what they call a
"crosstie", which is a configuration file containing a list of all the
required apps/libraries that will get, e.g. Office, running. Things like
the right version of MSXML, dotNet Framework, etc. These libraries are
downloaded and installed in the correct order before your app is installed.
Again, you can do all this yourself, but...

3) Backporting. Paying $40 for a lifetime license is not much considering
Codeweavers actually hire WINE developers and contribute a lot to the WINE
projects. They're the largest group of WINE developers by far. Things like
DirectX support, Installshield, dotNet, etc, wouldn't work without them.
