Geofrey, Well if your using Linux your in luck. Most of the large databases in use today are Linux based i.e. MySQL,PostgreSQL, Oracle, NoSQL, MongoDB so you have plenty of choice.
At the moment there is a lot of change in the world of databases. In the past we mainly focused on what where call Relational Databases but the recent explosion of massive web based applications has give birth to a new breed of databases based on schema-less databases. My advise would be to try and find some good e-books. There are plenty on the web. Then install a few on a Linux VM. Try programming a HTML form or PHP form which can interact with it. >From there you imagination is your only barrier. Do you have a specific need for a database? That can really help having a target. Enjoy.
