The full functionality of layout LFSCK for handling orphan OST-objects is available since Lustre-2.6.

In order to delete the orphan OST objects you need to mark the OST active again on the MDS and restart the MDS. There were a couple of bugs fixed in this area in 2.9.0 (maybe 2.8.0 already, I can't recall offhand) so that this isn't needed in the future. Please keep in mind that many features described in the 2.x manual aren't available because we are only using 2.5.3. (For instance, the --type layout option, which seems to be what we want (check and repair MDT-OST inconsistency) is not available until 2.6.
