Dear lutenists, in his "Hortus Musicalis Novus" (Argentorati (=Strassburg), 1615) Elias Mertel has lots of more or less pedagogical material, also for scales. The first part ("Praeludia") is especially useful: See for example pieces no. 1, 13, 31, 65, 72, 73, 78, 88, 89, 95, 109, 135, 138, 142, 150, etc., etc.
There are also wonderful "etydes" for chords, arpeggiating, and many other techniques. And it is good music! Not just technique. And the second part ("Phantasie et Fugae") contains huge amount (120) of bigger pieces, from the style of F. da Milano to the Italian early baroque. Arto
