Gaultier 1669 and Gallot 1670 as well as Mouton 1698 both teach sth.

lowest to highest note. According to them, you would have to play first
thumb, then forefinger, and at last second finger. From Gaultier, you
might conclude that the forefinger may either rake (tirer) or strumm
(rabatter) quickly.

that is only usual when two bass notes are on two neighbouring courses.
It is very often in Gallot's pieces, especially sarabandes and
chaconnes.
