Hello Tom,=20
the breaking point concerne a question of the vibrating string length =
dimension in relation to the note of the 1st string.=20
This is not so important, in matter or string lifetime,if you already =
have a lute of the right vibrating str. length.
In your case, may I give you some suggestions?
They came out from Mace and Dowland.
The first is make sure that groves on the neck-bone are not too deep; =
Mace suggested to make them with a knife.
The second is to make them very, very polished; put into each grove a =
pencil-graphite.
This very important. So the tension between peg and bone is in every =
moment the same of bone to bridge.
The next suggestion: put the tuning of the 1st string down of a tone =
when you do not play the lute (see T. Robinsin's suggestions).
The last point, quoted from Mace: put few string quantity on the peg.
All these indications help the tune stability. also.
The breacking index of nylgut is similar to the gut (i.e. 260 Hzxmeter). =
This mean that, teorically, a lute in g at a-440 Hz must be have not =
more of 62 cms of vibrating string lenght. Nylon can be rech a semitone =
higher.
