My favorite portrait of a lutenist is the engraving on the titlepage of Sebastian Ochsenkhun's tablature book of 1558. There is a surprised look of disgust on his face. You can almost hear the expletive he uttered at that moment. Why? If you carefullly examine the engraving you'll find out has just broken a string!
