Well... What sort of finish is on your lute?
I've seen some finishes that the best thing to use would be Turtle Wax or some other auto polish since they're so full of polyurethane! I used to use Tres Amigos or something like that on most of the instruments I owned. It worked and I never noticed a problem with it, but again these all had hard, high gloss finishes.
