Contrary to what Arto might think Ukraine was not a baroque wasteland (the upper strata of the Cossack society sent their children to Oxford and Sorbonne, and sang and danced to La Mantovana (the Ukrainians still do, to this day)). It had its own "Commedia dell'Arte" type of a theatre called "Vertep" and Cossack Mamai is indeed a personage from it. Interestingly some of the earliest Kobza iconography is found in the paintings of Alessandro Magnasco of Genoa. RT
