 From the point of view of the humble listener this statement is  
quite wrong, as was illustrated for me when I heard Joanna McGregor  
(at the Huddersfiled Contemporary Music Festival would you believe)  
play Dowland's Forlorn Hope Fancy on a grand piano. Have a listen to  
it on her CD 'Play' . You may or may not like the interpretation, but  
as a live concert piece, in amongst other pieces from this CD, it was  
a stunning musical experience. (OK, so that's renaissance music but  
the point still holds.)
